The Regional Equity Monitoring Project (REMP) is a non-partisan, non-profit civic engagement campaign. REMP is an independent, objective voice that advocates and monitors for minority inclusion. It utilizes research, best practices, trained community monitors and meetings with all stakeholders to ensure greater equity and inclusion throughout Pennsylvania. In partnership with the Black Political Empowerment Project (B-PEP), REMP PHASE II was developed to address the issues of economic and social inequality in Pennsylvania. REMP works to bridge the gap between the experience of inequality and the actionable steps necessary to improve institutional practices.
Right now, Governor Ed Rendell, city and county leaders are deciding how to spend our stimulus funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. REMP is working to ensure that monies are spent where it is truly needed, so that under-served communities across Pennsylvania can benefit from these investments.
REMP is currently:
- Training monitors to attend and report on activities at dozens of city, county, and state institutions
- Gathering and analyzing the data reported by monitors
- Using the data to support:
- testifying at public hearings
- distributing action alerts to promote civic participation in local and state government
- influencing policy at institutions such as unions and school districts
- advocating for the rights of minority groups
- promoting transparency and accountability in government, corporations, and institutions
- informing critical dialog with leaders such as the mayor, county executive, and superintendent of schools
- monitoring compliance with existing equity laws and standards
- Keeping media informed so that they can report the facts
- Reporting to all stakeholders through publications and presentations
- Staffing a hotline for monitor training and reporting
- Developing and maintaining a public access web site
- Expanding REMP services beyond southwestern Pennsylvania.
